Hi it depends on the editor, what do you use ?

nearly a duplicate question of: how-to-tag-a-only-section-of-a-road-as-oneway (oneway instead of name) and changing-the-status-of-a-separate-section-of-a-road (Potlatch2 instead of – likely – iD).

If you're using "iD" (the default web editor on OpenStreetMap.org) click on the way (road), then click on the node in the way that you want to divide it at, and you should see a "scissors" icon in the radial menu:

iD Scissors icon in radial menu

Click that, and the road will be split in two. You can then click on each section and give it the correct name.

This is not relevant here, however, some other users reading this question and answer might be interested: If there is no node in the way, where it changes its name you first need to insert one (e.g. by dragging the small phantom nodes a bit). After this: proceed as described above.

If the node in the way (where it changes its name) also belongs to another (crossing) way, then you, in addition, should select the way (hold down the shift key on your keyboard [mouse cursor gets a "+" icon then] while clicking the way) which you want to split at this node. If you do not select also a way then all ways get split at this node.

Hai, please read these pages concerning three editors for OSM, all with specific rules and possibilities, http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Editing

You need to remove the dot from that link for it to work.

Meta: I'm not sure it's a great idea to confuse new users by responding "here are three different programs you can try!" to a simple "how do I do this very basic thing?".

(16 Jan '14, 08:20) Richard ♦

But what if the user doesn’t react to a simple question about the used method ? Just hand the complete package ? And make your own choice.

Why should a new user to OSM have to even know what "an editor" is? Chances are they're using the default one. Don't make editing any more difficult than it needs to be.
