Do I just simply connect two parallel roads with a new one-way road, maybe without even creating new nodes?

I have read a lot of the OSM wiki and searched for "u-turn" here as well, but only found things about "no u-turn restrictions", and about tagging lanes using turn=reverse for reverse/U-turn only.

Is there a tag like highway=u-turn or u-turn=yes? If no, how does OSM navigation apps display u-turns? I haven't been able to spot a U-turn in my area map.

Can you explain in more detail what you mean by u-turn (photo ?). To me, a u-turn is a car manoeuvre, not a mappable road feature (beyond the mappable restrictions and obligations you already found in the wiki).

meta @raito: if there is an accepted answer, then please do not close a question. That is really not needed then (it is clear by the "accept" that this question has already a good answer) and would prevent someone else from adding another answer (just in case).

Ok. But "The question is answered, right answer was accepted" is in the dropdown list of reasons when you try to close a question.

@raito: yes, I know. Still, it is not useful. :-)

For a divided highway simply adding a connecting road between the two directions should be all you need. Routers will automatically detect that a U-turn can be made there. If the connection is restricted (many of them here say "emergency vehicles only") then you would need to put access or turn restrictions on them to keep routers from using them.

One example (including lane detail and destination sign relations) is near the Cherokee Casino Ramona. http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=16/36.5611/-95.9298

Thanks! That's a very helpful example. So turn:lanes=reverse is the key, and also the proposed placement=transition.

Yeah, I've been leaving off transitions a bit where it's inobvious where they are or when it's incredibly awkward to do so (such as on two-way roads where only one side's got the transition, or where the transition would make it harder to tell where the lanes will be after the transition).

Also, I'm not clear on the concept, but I believe this may also qualify as an incomplete example of a Michigan left (and if someone can confirm, I'll be happy to attempt to update the tagging to handle that situation).
