Which extension to chose when Exporting a selection for Oruxmaps use?

I think osm.org is not for Oruxmaps/offline use. **Still not answered**

Being more specific: I meant chosing between exts. like: PGN, JPEG etc., I mean the row of possibilities where you have to chose one of these befor exporting your hand-made selected mapregion ..... to?? To what? It does not say. May be you can give me an answer here as well, thank you.

I have more. I am looking for finding maps for Offline use in Oruxmaps. I read that .map is the extension there, this is why I asked this question in OSM, so here. PNG, JPEG etc. is not .map. I am confused because Iread also that Open Streetmap can be used in Oruxmaps....

It is a whirlpool for me, a walking garden with curling paths and that does not give the exit.

May be you can be of a help here.

osm.org is about building a database of geodata (to create maps or other services from the data). So you can use OSM's data with many programs. Depending on the application and what data processing(!) steps other people did for you it is simple or not so simple.

The most simple bit to use OSM's data in a mobile application is to just (online) view pre-rendered maps (based on OSM) in your application. Your mobile does need a Internet connection for this. Many apps are able to save the map parts (Orux too: "Online maps can be cached for offline navigation.") on your device which you've already seen ("caching"), so they do not need to be downloaded again and it enables you also to view them without a Internet connection. This is what andy mackey mentions in his answer. I recommend this method to you.

See how/where to get offline maps for OruxMaps (in our wiki). Such maps cover a quite big area and you do not need to view them on your device in advance (you just need to copy such a map to your device and then you can go outside). However, it looks like you cannot (directly) use an export from osm.org with OruxMaps (I guess that is your question about). So using OSM-based maps offline seems not to be that easy.

Detailed help on the use of OruxMaps's interface is not really in the scope of this OSM help page, sorry. OruxMaps specific questions may be asked at their forum. If OruxMaps is to hard to use for your needs you could try another app.

With the ORUX app running and while connected by Wi Fi choose the map in the app's menu and it will down load the map and if you have it set to cache the map it can be used off line. You will have to scroll around the area you want to store before going out of range of wi fi or a signal.

Thanks for the hint: Wifi/phonewise!! What do you mean with: "choose the map in app's menu" ? What do you mean with: "it will download the map" (which map? I shall have to set my wished region first??)

"You will have to scroll etc. ": this means: you are bound to your own set boundaries, well, ofcourse??? (Conclusion o.k.?)

when you have orux running on your android phone at the top right corner of the screen tap on world map icon, then tap switch map, then select the map you want from the long list. hopefully it will start to download the map around you but only if you have gps location. To save more map you have to scroll or slide around for more map if you have enough cache space it will save these areas for off-line use.

The main problem with Orux is that although it's has lots of clever stuff it hard to understand as the creator's first language is Spanish and I find getting to the instructions in the english PDF hard. Orux will display OSM garmin.img maps but I have not got that to work so far.

I put the .img file into the file "oruxmaps" and in settings pointed it there. I then selected maps offline. I had to turn device off a few times and try again,a bit like restarting a pc. orux now displays the same gmapsupp.img that I use in my Garmin (whole of GB) while offline. but map is rendered in a different style.

How did I install a mapforge osm map

I went to mapforge and found England map and down loaded the england.map
I connected the device with usb cable to my PC and searched to see the device’s files looking for “oruxmap” folder
I copied the england.map into the oruxmaps folder
I then disconnected the device and turned the device off.
I waited for short time and then turned device on (SD can’t be found otherwise), tapped orux to start it
In orux settings map chose sd, oruxmaps, england
in orux tapped world map icon, switch map, off line map, oruxmaps, england, used back key and the map appeared. I did have to turn device off and on and turn again a few times and checked settings and choose england for it to work. I got the map from here http://download.mapsforge.org/maps/europe/
