Dear All, We are using open street map. We have downloaded tiles from open street map website. We need to have Hoang Sa (Paracel) Islands and Truong Sa (Spratly) islands displayed on the map. These islands are located in China sea. These Vietnamese islands are clearly visible in Google maps - https://maps.google.com/maps?q=google+map+vietnam&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=0x31157a4d736a1e5f:0xb03bb0c9e2fe62be,Vi%E1%BB%87t+Nam&gl=vn&ei=iSddUauvA8uJrAf_joDICg&ved=0CCwQ8gEwAA. However, these cannot be seen on Open street map. Is there someone who can guide/help us in displaying these. We need the tiles to display at least some version of these islands on the maps. Please respond urgently. Regards, Amit asked 04 Apr '13, 11:43 amitj1978 aseerel4c26 ♦ |
The question has been closed for the following reason "The question is answered. Paracel islands are closed now due to overcrowding by questions, sorry." by aseerel4c26 09 Apr '13, 00:00
As noted in the wikipedia links above, both island groups mentioned are disputed by a number of different states in the region. In cases like this, there's unlikely to be a suitable answer that's acceptable to all claimants. An overview of the way that OpenStreetMap deals with disputes is described on this wiki page. The normal way of resolving is the "on the ground" rule - "whatever name, designation, etc are used by the people on the ground at that location are used in the non-localized tags". Unfortunately in sparsely- or non-populated areas that's difficult to apply. Although a number of individual edits have been made in this area (and then changed by others of different political persuations), this isn't likely to provide a solution that all parties agree on - mediation via the Data Working Group is likely to provide a better way forward. answered 04 Apr '13, 12:45 SomeoneElse ♦ 1
Hmm, I do not necessarily read a question about nation conflict in the original question. Only about displaying some version ("display at least some version of these islands on the maps") - whatever is meant by that. Maybe a name. Currently e.g. the Paracel group will probably not get displayed anywhere since the multipoly is just named but has no topic tags.

Mapping the out line of the islands could be done fairly easily if we had a good calibrated aerial images. If you have to latitude and longitude preferably in Degrees and decimal degrees we could check the available images. The island could be mapped with a GPS ( or lots of them which was to procedure when OSM started ) but it wouldn't be done quickly. answered 04 Apr '13, 12:11 andy mackey old question https://help.openstreetmap.org/questions/5614/bing-satellite-imagery-coverage-zoom-level

Some of these islands (are they part of Spratly) have polygons (outlines) but the tagging is not correct, if it was they would probably appear on the rendered map.

A side note since you mention to download tiles, in case that a many tiles: please respect our Tile_usage_policy.
Paracel Islands are named and in OSM's data. At least some of the Spratly islands are also in our data.
Do you mean that you would like to see the name of the island group? On which tiles? There are many map styles.
