I was working on the Eastern end of the Stour Valley Path yesterday, and when I'd followed the footpath to just East of Bures, I found that there is another relation that has been created for the same long distance path. Is there an easy way to merge the two? asked 04 Jan '11, 12:51 Rowland |
Using Potlatch 2, here's how you move all the ways from relation B to relation A. Note that both relations will need to have been loaded - in other words, you need to pan to an area that has both in.

That's not quite the same as merging the relations: You have moved all members from relation B to relation A, but B will remain as an empty relation, which is rather ugly and arguably incorrect. Unfortunately, you cannot delete relations in Potlatch2...

I refer the honourable gentleman to a separate question in which it's pointed out that you can't yet delete relations in P2 but that it'll be coming in a future version.

Also, there is a potentially significant loss of data in this method in that the role of the member is not copied to the new relation. You have to check and copy the role, if any, manually, which makes this method very cumbersome.

In JOSM you open both relations for editing in the relation-editor (on the right, select the relation from the list and click on the icon with the sheet of paper, eventually you have to make the dialog visible by clicking on the left vertical icon list, cog wheel icon.).
answered 20 Apr '11, 11:26 dieterdreist Unfortunately roles are not transferred. Do you know how to copy them also?

It is possible and easy, if you know some XML. Download the relations as .osm files and merge them manually in a text editor. answered 07 Jan '11, 14:25 Kartograefin Of course you could do that (though many people's idea of "easy" is not "download an XML file and edit it"), but how would you upload the result?

If you really, really wanted to do it this way then I guess that you'd use http://rawedit.openstreetmap.fr/ to upload the new version of the one that you want to keep and delete the one that you don't. Not that I'd recommend that when there are nice editors around that do the heavy lifting for you, mind.

You can use JOSM to upload it.

Is there a way to merge relations in ID?
I think this is better done as a new question. The original question & answers here are rather old.
I asked that question. iD cannot do this: https://help.openstreetmap.org/questions/86041/how-can-i-removemerge-duplicate-relations
