Under 'View', 'Map Paint Styles', 'Map Paint Preferences', I chose the 'Less Obtrusive Nodes' option and that seems to clear my screen of Placenames. Placenames until I zoom in quite close. I normally edit with 'JOSM default (MapCSS)' + 'Potlatch 2 and the placenames are quite large but using 'JOSM default (MapCSS)' alone tones them down a bit. 'Wireframe' view also de-clutters the screen.
