Trying to download OSM maps either using the "Export" key on the OSM page or using Mapwel's dedicated OSM map download function. Neither works. Is there something up with the download server? Ideas/suggestions please?

Instead of using the Export tab on the OSM page to get .osm data, you can use a Planet extract. These are available for a variety of countries/areas, covering most of the world. See Planet.osm

If you don't need all of the area of a Planet extract, you can use Osmosis or Osmconvert to extract a smaller area, before loading it into Mapwel. Or use Splitter to split it into smaller tiles.

This is a typical question for IRC. You can see the server stats at munin. It looks like they currently have some problems with the data centers. Consider donating for more stability.
