Why does Potlatch 2 say it doesn’t recognise tags?

5

Just getting started using potlatch 2. finding some tags not listed under simple menu. check them using map feature page and enter using advanced but some come back as "not recognized". If these are deprecated shouldn't that be reflected in the feature page somewhere? 2 examples I tried: shop:hardware and amenity:dentist

This is a misunderstanding, but perhaps one that should mean a change in Potlatch 2. When you see the message "Not recognised" you're being told that the preset file Potlatch 2 is working from doesn't have the feature you're editing included. This doesn't mean it uses invalid tags (since you can use Any Tags You Like in OSM), just that there's no simple preset for it.

You aren't doing anything wrong by adding features using these tags (providing you're using them in a manner consistent with the documentation), and you shouldn't take Potlatch 2's message to mean there's a problem with your tagging.
