For older/importantant buildings it seems reasonable to record the year of construction along with the name or the architect. How to tag the date when some feature appeared?

I'm not to fond of the start_date tag, but I usually tag the construction years, architect and start_date anyways.

This would be a building for me:

  • building=residential
  • construction_date=2008-2011
  • start_date=2011
  • architect=Åwl; Frans Bengtsson

And the landuse=construction would have been tagged with:

The architect tag is a bit free form, but so is the date tags unfortunately. I also like to add websites to construction areas, which tend to be a bit free form as well.

Looking through the wiki it seems start_date is the most likely key to use. I also searched taginfo.openstreetmap.org for the words constructed and built, which are little used in comparison:
