I wish to map some larger sink holes (also known as depressions, shake holes, etc.) where underground caves have collapsed, but cannot find an appropriate tag - can anyone advise please? I have searched on sink hole, depression and shake hole but can find nothing. As these provide topographical features used for navigation on open moorland I'd like to include some larger ones. An example is here if you look at the Yahoo/Bing imagery. NB the quarry shown in the NE sector is a man-made quarry but the other depressions are natural collapses so I am reluctant to use the quarry tag. Any advice would be very much appreciated please - thank you. Robin |

There's no harm in trial-and-error (so long as it is not a detriment). We all try and do good and aesthetic work, see if natural=cliff looks good in conjunction with cave_entrance (if there's more than just a hole). You can add natural=bedrock and natural=scree depending on the immediate environment and geological=outcrop. See what it looks like |

If the sink hole is filled with water why not use lake and if it just a hole, use natural=cave_entrance vertice in conjunction with natural=cliff polygon? Don't forget to add name=name! Thanks Meersbrook but these don't contain any water at all. I'd thought of using 'cliff' but wasn't sure if that was appropriate?

If the edges of sinkhole are vertical then using natural=cliff for it is probably good enough. But if the edges are cone-shaped then natural=cliff is not the tag to use for it. Currently there seems to be no tag used for these natural features. Probably natural=sinkhole would fit. You may also further discuss it on the tagging mailinglist.

Thanks for the responses. Curiously I've discovered that if drawing a closed ring of nodes for the natural:cliff attribute it doesn't render. I need to go back in and split the way to make it do so.
