Since high-mast lighting "towers" rather stand out in the real world, I thought perhaps I should place points for them. These are the towers that have anywhere from 4 to 8 lights in a circle at the top, high above the roadways, usually in motorway/freeway interchanges. I was disappointed later, however, when I went to VIEW the map and they were represented as if they were communications towers. Is there some way to make sure they get represented for what the actually are?

I hoped that high points would show on the map but few seem bothered http://help.openstreetmap.org/questions/2390/noticeable-way-points-or-landmarks

Last time I checked highway=street_lamp was not rendered in the default mapnik style. If you tag it as a comunications tower it will show up as a couminications tower.

Expanding on what Gnonthgol said a little, just because something doesn't show up in the "default mapnik style" (the style used by www.openstreetmap.org) doesn't mean that you shouldn't map it. But you should definitely use the correct tags, even if that means you won't see it.
