Why is my osm server very slow over network?

I have the latest port installed. Ubuntu 11.10 64bit. Gem 1.8.11, rails v2.3.14, postgresql 8.4.8. It works fast on my local pc though. I tried internet proxy and lan access, they both are very slow. Does anyone has any clues?

EDIT: It's actually harder to understand what's going on. Sometimes it works fast on my pc if i access my server from it first. It works slower if i connect to my server after someone else's pc.

One utility is try with Wireshark on a slow PC and view DNS resolution steps and connection activity to determine what happened before a pause or slow operation.
