Although the roundabout shows direction arrows in Potlatch 2 the description does not give an indication of oneway. This puzzles me - can anyone explain? |

Roundabouts are oneway by default, see the wiki. It is mini_roundabouts (on nodes) that used to default to direction=anti-clockwise if untagged (and probably still do in editors, though someone has tweaked the wiki to say direction should be obvious from which country they are in, and direction tag is therefore optional).

Has this changed in the last year. I seem to remember that direction had to be specified when I started twelve months ago.
The direction is specified by the direction of the way(s) making up the roundabout (this should be anti-clockwise for countries with right hand traffic, clockwise for the UK and others).

No. This has never changed. Roundabout is the only highways class where oneway=yes is implied. If it is not oneway, then it is not a roundabout. That were lots of discussions about oneway implied or not for motorways and motorway links but that's another story. Only few people tried to push the oneway tag to everything, including roundabouts, but it was massively rejected.
routeing is dependent on lots of first exit, third exit ect. and without the software going the correct way round... you get the idea, so I presume it was sensibly decided to automatically to make roundabouts default to one way
