How do you download an area about 6 by 4 km as an image file (jpg, png or pdf, doesn't matter) at roughly 1:15000 scale? When you go to Share > Image > and enter a number in the scale field it overrides your entry. I only need an image, not the data. asked 03 Jan, 12:11 haslreadybee...

I was wondering if something like that was happening as I tried decreasing physical area being mapped to around 2x2 km and varrious different paper sizes but still couldn't get street names to appear. I supposed there could be some perfect combination but it could require dozens of trials to find it. Meanwhile I discovered Those were: Printmaps.net, map-machine.com, printmaps-osm.de, Mappa Pro and milvusmap.edu answered 10 Jan, 21:29 haslreadybee... ah I've now gone all the web services and a few of the freestanding programs at and they all aren't useable for the above reasons.

The problem is likely the following: Streets can be split into several smaller bits in OSM, maybe because there are different speed limits on each bit, or a bus line uses one bit but not the other. The map drawing algorithm doesn't combine these back into one, hence it tries to find a bit that is big enough to put the name on, and doesn't find one. -- I don't think any of the map styles on print.get-map.org has code to remedy this issue, which means that it is going to be rather complicated to fix. It would essentially require installing the rendering code on your own machine and modifying the OSM data in your local database before the rendering happens. answered 10 Jan, 18:22 Frederik Ramm ♦ The streets do show up when I save as multipage pdf so doesn't that mean print.get-map.org does somehow have a capacity to do what you're talking about? Here are screenshots of png and multipage pdf of the same selected geographic area (small closeup shots of much larger files). I can't get images to upload here in the forum.

Also, much lower on my MapOSMatic TODO list though, I have "multi page poster mode" ("Bravo Starschnitt" for the older Germans among us), with cut marks etc., to support creating larger posters from smaller individual prints. The current multipage mode was never meant for this though ... answered 10 Jan, 21:00 Hartmut |
There are two issues here, unfortunately:

This is terrific and is exactly what I was looking for, thank you, except that I can't get it to show all (r nearly all) the street names at the magnification I want. Do you know anything about this? It leaves out names of smaller streets even when there's plenty of room. For example - If make the the image very very large, 700x700 mm (8300x8300 pixels) it leaves out street names (first image, marked in red) but they show up if I save it as multipage pdf (second image). But the mulitpage is bigger than needs to be, 6 x 6 A4 pages. Everything could be shrunk 25 or 30% and the text would still be legible. If I could get the street names to appear in a single large png/jpg I could shrink it to whatever multipage layout I want for printing, for example split it myself or set it to print across multiple pages. -- I uploaded images but they're not showing. Trying to solve it now -- answered 10 Jan, 18:17 haslreadybee... |
Try the free service at print.get-map.org if the download resolution resolution offered on the OSM website isn't good enough. answered 03 Jan, 13:47 Frederik Ramm ♦ |
