Why not ask your question on the new OpenStreetMap Community Forum?

I would like to have still images of OSM map captured and then published on my website. AND I need to draw a trail on those images (so I can show someone: "go that way").

May I do that? Are there any criteria I have to fulfill while doing so?

The simplest way is to go to the "Export" tab and dowload an image. This may become unavalable in peak houres. Then you can draw the trail on the images in your favorite image processing application. If you export in SVG you may be able to change the color of the lines instead of drawing new lines over it, assuming your program supports editing SVG files.

The only criteria is the licence terms which sais you have to credit the image with "© OpenStreetMap contributors, CC-BY-SA".

The answer is yes.

The whole image you publish, including the track you draw upon it, must be released under the CC-BY-SA 2.0 license, i.e. you cannot say "the image is free but the track is mine alone". And you have to attribute the source, i.e. you have to say "Map from OpenStreetMap" or so.

As for the technical means of producing such an imaga - in addition to the Export tab or an SVG export, there's obviously also the option of making a screenshot.
