Hi, Its seems useful to be able to view the Yahoo aerials to check what you are entering, but whwn I zoom in, the background disappears. Is that supposed to happen (copyright reasons ??) or am I doing something wrong ?

In most of the world, Yahoo's aerial imagery is only low-resolution - whether you're looking at it in an OpenStreetMap editor, on the Yahoo maps website, or wherever. Outside the US, only a small number of cities have high-resolution imagery. If the background disappears, that indicates that there is no imagery available at that zoom level.

It's not as good as (say) Google's aerial imagery which is high resolution for entire countries... but Google haven't given us the permission that Yahoo have.

Only in certain areas we can use the areal images from Yahoo where they have a good resolution for mapping purposes.

You can find a list here

The Potlatch editor shows Yahoo imagery at the maximum available resolution. The JOSM editor cannot use the Flash API and so is limited to lower resolution with Yahoo. See JOSM trac ticket #2840.
