Prevent Search Marker From Disappearing

I make a search in the search bar and select go. The map zooms and isolates an area, but there is no place marker shown and I cannot see the name of the place I am looking for. I hover over or select a place link in the left side bar and a marker appears over the place I have searched for. But when I move the mouse over the map, the place marker disappears, and I have to manually search by a combination of dragging and zooming. Is there a setting for fixing the place marker? Thanks.
