Thank you for reading my question. In the area where I live, many ways' functions and access restrictions change depending on the season. I am mainly thinking of ways that are public groomed nordic (cross country ski) trails (but expressly NOT for snowshoeing or hiking) during the winter and some other type during the summer. Some examples:

  1. Public groomed nordic-only trail during winter, public hiking trail during summer
  2. Public groomed nordic-only trail during winter, public hiking and MTB trail during summer
  3. Public groomed nordic-only trail during winter, private-access-only footpath during summer
  4. Public groomed nordic-only trail during winter, public unpaved road during summer (e.g. Forest Service road)

The exact dates that define summer and winter vary by year according to snowfall amounts. During winter, signs tell people they are not allowed to hike or snowshoe on these trails - only nordic ski.

  • Do these ways need to be mapped twice, i.e. one line tagged with winter function and access data, and another line with identical position tagged with summer function and access data?
  • Or can a single line (way) be tagged with both summer and winter data in a manner that will allow users to understand when it can be used for what?
