Hi, It looks like the name has been reinstated. 1
To people from Iran, it is "The Persian Gulf" and nothing rlse. To people from the Arabic world it is not called that. It has changed its name a couple of times this afternoon already; which shows in 3rd party apps depends on the lag betweeen OSM updates and their app.

I checked again and apparently it hasn't yet been fixed. I am using a map service called Oikotie (linked below), that is using the data provided by OpenStreetMap through an intermediary service called Leaflet (linked below). In the Oikotie map, it is visible that the name is not present. I raised the issue with Leaflet. However, they said they can't do anything about it, because they only use the data provided by OpenStreetMap. Just to be clear, Leaflet has nothing to do with map data, it just allows you to display a map that you have already created (and it is very good at that).

The tag alt_name:en=Persian Gulf was added/reinstated to the Relation: Persian Gulf (9326283) in Changeset: 131266207 The local Persian name (of Persian Gulf) is tagged as name=خلیج فارس

did I understood correctly that the service provided by Oikotie is based on a locally-saved, modified instance of data from OpenStreetMap, which does not synchronize with any changes made afterwards in the OpenStreetMap server? The data for the UK claims to be based on 4 or 5 sources, of which OSM is one. You'll have to ask the site itself exactly what they do. I can say that their building data where I live is not from OSM (and it does not match reality).
