I'd like to add a short name to a building, but I'm having trouble doing so. When I go into the editor, the only name key that I seem to be able to use is the main "Name" one. Any idea what I need to do differently?

Which editor are you referring to? (There are lot of different editors available).

If you would use e.g. iD, the editor in use if you click the "edit" button on openstreetmap.org, you would have to click the "+" button under "Tags", than use "short_name" as key and enter the value for the short_name.
