Hi, I want to add car stops on Pender Island. The nearest concept I found in the wiki is the bus stop. Is there a car stop? Should I use bus stops? The bus stop page mentions that a bus stop is based upon a node. How is a node added to the map? Then how is the node annotated as a bus stop or car stop. These simple procedures really should be documented. Thx, ... p. asked 22 Oct '22, 13:45 Peter Easthope

What is a "car stop"? What is a "car" to you? In your dialect of English does "car" perhaps mean "a type of bus" like it can in French?
"How is a node added to the map? Then how is the node annotated as a bus stop or car stop. These simple procedures really should be documented." You could try https://learnosm.org/en/beginner/ , in particular the section on "adding your first points": https://learnosm.org/en/beginner/start-osm/#adding-your-first-points
I'm not sure exactly what a "car stop" is, is this a kind of public transport in your area, or maybe something equivalent to a taxi stand (taxi rank)? If it is something that doesn't have a direct equivalent outside your area, you might need to invent your own tag.
A formalized system of hitchhiking.

Thanks.
Seems reasonable although I don't know how a tag is created. A node is needed before it is tagged.

https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/keys/hitchhiking#values is used in Germany. See https://overpass-turbo.eu/s/1mY1 . It looks like the generic term is https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitfahrbank , although I've no idea if there's a bench in your example. The description on e.g. https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/6855341945 seems to describe the process there.
Adding a point is easy when a tag in the small list is applicable. But a car stop is not a hospital, restaurant, etc. My edit is blocked until an appropriate tag is found. =8~/ This really doesn't encourage a contribution from a non-expert.
Some car stops have a bench; others do not. Same as bus stops. Some have a bench; others do not. The bench is not a defining feature. The only defining feature is the sign.
Will try to create a "car stop" tag.
Thx, ... P.
You mean "hitchhiking" is a tag? The iD editor allowed typing "hitchhiking" in the tag field. Then "save" appeared to work. Then I opened the map again and the two new points were not visible. =8~/ So, for me, the map is not editable. =8~/
Thx, ... P.
You can use any tags you like. What you can't expect is that any particular map made from OSM data (which which there are probably thousands) will show the rare key that you're using.
What you are describing ("car stop") is literally not a thing anywhere else in the world. For me, the 9th item on that page talks about "The Canadian Islands Where Hitchhiking Is Encouraged".
You can create your own map doing that, based on a query of OSM data.
