In Texas, we call all "foot paths" that are paved sidewalks. We call scenic ones that you may take for a leisurely stroll "greenways".

It seems the terminology in OSM is different. For clarification is this a good rule of thumb,

If it does not parallel a road, it is NOT a sidwalk

I think that's right, allowing for a sensible interpretation of "parallel", e.g. near intersections there may be curved sections of sidewalks that are not strictly parallel to any of the streets.
