Can't figure this one out. I've set the editor to show only buildings, and I'm trying to select multiple at once. I know about holding shift and clicking them one by one, but it would be nice if I could use the lasso selection tool.

When I use the lasso selection, it never selects buildings, no matter what. Is there some kind of mode, or a different tool, or an option or something, by which I can lasso-select buildings instead of the points that make up those buildings?

If not, then please consider this a feature request. Or a bug report I guess, because it's selecting features that are being hidden, which doesn't seem correct.

As SimonPoole already asked, what editor is you using?

In JOSM it's easy to select only buildings with help of the filter function.

At the risk of stating the bleeding obvious, if someone is referring to "the editor" then they're talking about iD, the in-browser editor that users get by default.

There are other OSM editors available - more information can be found here.

Sorry for the late response, but I was indeed talking about iD.

I have some select words for JOSM, which I shall keep to myself. This is why I prefer to stick with the official (for lack of a better word) way of editing the map.

After lasso-selecting the points, hold down the Control key (Command on a Mac) and press the up arrow to select the ways that contain the points, which would be building areas in this case.

This is the way. Thanks!

I really wish editor features had better discoverability (and predictability).

Today I learnt that there's a lasso-selection capability within iD :)

The problem outlined here seems to be mentioned on this iD issue (and also this one). The ability to select ways rather than points doesn't appear to have been released yet, and the person who was working on it is a different person to the current iD maintainer, so it's difficult to say what current plans are.

Edit: Actually - it has been released! See answer above by Minh.
