The changes are available in the database immediately.

The rendered tiles take a while to update. Other services based on OSM like the routing on the main page and others downstream providers also update at their own pace.

For tiles clearing your browser cache for the site can be useful to force a reload. The English FAQ on the wiki has some further information on this.
