Hi,

The name "Carolinas" is commonly used to describe both North Carolina and South Carolina. Thes states exist separately on OSM. I wanted to add a new node for "Carolinas" as it's commonly used on social media this way but wants to hear from you first?

I want an easy way to create a node by merging exisiting North Carolina and South Carolina borders. Is this possible? I need that because I work on automating the extracting of locations names over social media posts and wants to link those locations againts OSM.

Thanks!

While technically this is quite simple (either create a new boundary from the existing ones or a relation that contains both), typically boundaries are associated (exceptions noted) for administrative entities something that doesn't exist in this case. So I would suggest the best course of action would be to discuss this with the US community, before going of and doing something that is sure to create strife.

Hi,

If you want to link locations name from social media to OSM, you'll need a smart translation table anyway.

I don't know much of US habits, but I've heard of the rockies, the midwest, east coast and so on... None of these are in OSM I think, that would be too complicated to maintain.

Here in France, people use lot of expression to describe places. The hexagon means the continental part of France, the regions have changed recently so most use the old names (and extents) and so on.

Good luck with your project.
