I'm looking for at better feature type than "wall" for a low barrier made from earth and/or stone - in Danish "jorddige" or "stendige". "Wall" sound like something that can't be passed, but these barriers are often rather old and withered (and protected) here in Denmark and can easily be passed. Is there a more appropriate feature type?

If these are old features of the wood, they may be closely related to what in the UK is called a "wood bank". These were formed by digging a ditch and piling the earth to one side. Often they existed as boundaries within a woodland (perhaps reflecting ownership). In the UK they are regarded as valuable archaeological features (e.g., on the High Weald). I mentioned one in a blog post a few years ago. There is an extensive literature on them in England, notably by WG Hoskins & Oliver Rackham. I'm not aware of any specific tag for them on OSM, but perhaps barrier=ditch might work, especially in conjunction with ditch=* (for instance ha-has are often mapped this way, although I feel that misses part of the construction). answered 18 Jan '22, 20:53  SK53 ♦ |
