How so I split a single line which is two separate trails?

Hi.

Please tell us what editor you are using.

Here is the doc for JOSM, about splitting a way on a node.

But trails should usually be mapped as hiking route relations, which is how a single way can be used for two different trails.

Please give us more details (including location) if this does not answer your question.

I am using the "Edit with ID (in-browser editor)"

I was able to split and re-label the trail.
