How can I add an icon to the map?

You cannot add new icons to the map that we display at http://www.openstreetmap.org/; the best you can do is suggest, via our bug tracker at trac.openstreetmap.org, an icon that you believe should be added for a certain category of objects. It is then the cartographers' decision whether or not they follow your suggestion.

But you can make your own maps with any icons you like! See the question How do I render my own maps for my web site to find out how.
