Hi, I am a research scientist. Recently one of our research paper has to use a map adapted from OSM for a publication. The editorial office encouraged us to get a use permission from OSM. Because of OpenStreetMap's open license, you do not need any special permission to publish an OSM-based map in an academic publication, the only requirement is that you provide proper attribution to OpenStreetMap. Unfortunately, some publishers insist on an explicit permission anyway. If that is the case here, you can try contacting the Licensing Working Group (LWG) at legal-questions@osmfoundation.org. The LWG is authorized to sign some common permission forms from academic journals and will know where to forward other requests. Yes, the publisher insists on a permission. I will try the email. OSM is free to use. You can point your editorial office to this. https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Main_Page OSM was created as an opensource map. This is why I and many others continue to contribute to the project. Just attribute OSM on any maps you use please. Thank you. I forwarded the page to the publisher, but it didn't accept it as a proof.
