I'm sure I'm being totally dim here, and I have followed several help videos on this. When I add a road using the line tool, and double-click the last point, I am expecting to see what I see in the help videos, the option to select what the feature type is, instead, I see nothing, and my road remains a 'line' no matter what I do.

Tried in Chrome and Edge.

Please help, really frustrating I cannot progress.

Hi,

Cannot post images yet, so link below. When I add the line, it informs me I need to select the feature type, but when I click on search, for track roads, I can see there are five results, but clicking on the > does nothing, just returns me to the same error?

I have uploaded a short vid of me being dim! https://youtu.be/KCXumL4ocYs

I assume you are talking about the editor iD on www.openstreetmap.org.

I can only guess now. Maybe you can post a screenshot of what you are actually seing if my answer does not help.

You should be able to select the object type in the left side panel. If you do not see that you might have to click on the button in the left top corner (white rectangle with a black part on the left) or press ` as keyboard shortcut.

I rarely use iD but it looks to me like the presets have failed to load somehow. Try reloading the page to see if this clears it. If you have work that you don't want to lose then you can manually add highway and track into the two boxes underneath the Tags heading and upload before reloading. To me this actually looks like it is highway=service and service=driveway rather than highway=track though so service may be more appropriate for the box on the right, with an additional row added for the second tag. These pages have some Africa specific tagging examples.

Thanks. By adding the tags is then converted it to the correct element.

Thanks a lot for the guidance!

I just tried editing in that Missing Maps task of yours as well. In that task you are supposed to map buildings and residential areas. I guess that is the reason why you cannot find roads in the list of objects. If you map an area you can select between building, residential area, village, hamlet and isolated dwelling.

So I think the simple answer is: roads have been deactivated for this task to focus you on what the task is about.

By the way: When you start editing on www.openstreetmap.org you have no limitations. But of course you are editing on your own there and not connected do the Missing Maps tasks. Still it will help and you also might want to map in other areas, for example you home area.
