Yesterday, I recorded a track with car and uploaded the GPX file to OpenStreetMap. Now when I'm using the GPX-track with Potlatch only small parts of my GPX track is visible and it is very hard to follow. Why is that? Is there any way I can make my GPX track more visible in Potlatch? I use Potlatch 2 on the website.

This is how it looks in Potlatch for me: alt text

The parts of the cyan track should be one long track.

If the trace was uploaded as other than private than it might help if you could link to it here (if you don't mind other people knowing where you've been, of course!)

Can you explain exactly what you're doing, click-by-click?

@Richard: I have uploaded an GPX-file on then I visit the area with Potlatch and choose "object Object" in the many, and parts of the track is shown. See my update with a screenshot.

@SomeoneElse: The track is private, but I updated my question with a screenshot from the track in Potlatch.

If you can make your track fully 'identifiable' and then post the id, I can have a look at it. Can't debug it without this I'm afraid.

I've not seen this when editing traces from the GPS trace list, but have seen it when selecting "GPS Data / GPS Data" from within Potlatch2. Here's an example:

You can see part of an outlier trace to the east of the A607, and another east-west portion at the left of the screen. That east-west one is an earlier one of mine from March 2010:

Edit it from the traces list and it's complete; edit as above and it's not.

@Richard: I made it "identifiable" now and it has ID: 1103919. It's a long one, the screenshot is from the north part.

I have also seen this when selecting "GPS Data" from Potlatch 2. That is, when showing all available traces in the area.

Part of the code has changed. We are aware of the issue and will fix it when we get a spare minute.

Thanks Richard, and I appreciate the feedback. Can u post a quick note here once it has been done ?

It turns out that Potlatch chops up tracks when the points are more than a certain distance apart. The workaround for me was to interpolate the affected tracks using GPSBabel:

gpsbabel -i gpx -f chopped.gpx -x interpolate,distance=0.095k -o gpx -F fixed.gpx

I posted some more details about the problem on my blog.

It looks to me as you might have bad satelite coverage, and the GPS is splitting up your track. That means that the parts of the track you do not see is parts where the GPS does not have a fix.

You can try opening the GPX file in another program like JOSM, Merkaartor or MapSource and see if any of those have the same problem.

If that it is a problem you might want to find a better place in the car to lay the GPS (wind screen, sun roof, outside, ...), let the GPS get a good fix before mapping or just be aware of the problems with the coverage.

The GPS fix was good and the track is not split up (only by Potlatch or It was just one long GPX track. Yes, I imported it to JOSM too and the GPX track shows good there, just one long track.

Have you lost any points in the trace or are the missing parts of the trace streight lines in JOSM? What does the trace look like when you download it from Is it still fragmented? Is it functionaly difrent from the original? Have you tried to reupload the original? Do you get the same problems?

(19 Sep '11, 10:59) Gnonthgol ♦

When I download the GPX from I get the complete track without errors. The parts that is missin in potlatch is sometimes strait and sometimes turns. I have made the track "identifieable" now, with ID: 1103919.
