In the city I work there's this situation:

However, since the wide space between the two yellow islands there are around 12 meters, I'm not really sure those two crossings can be tagged with crossing:island=yes because on one of the two sides of the island pedestrians are not protected from the incoming traffic.

Personally, I would rather regard the islands as traffic_calming=island and not as a crossing island. But I guess this judgement is highly subjective.

I hadn't thought of traffic_calming=island but it looks like a suitable tag for this kind of situation.
