Hi there!

I am wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to fetch information about the terrain/groundtype that a gps-track crosses through? If I have logged a mtb trail, can I view how much and what parts are on paved roads, gravel roads, in the forrest, on mountain sides, beaches etc...?

"possible": yes. Has somebody already written something that produces such information: not that I know of.

https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/GPXSee

are some possible candidates.

OpenRouteService shows you the surfaces you are covering with the calculated routes and you can also upload an existing GPX track which the tool will try to match to the roads. I just tried it and shows you the surfaces by percentages and also visualizes them on the map.

Other routing services might do the same.

This sounds like a map matching problem. Graphhopper has map matching capability.
