Reports say Google suffers of millions of fake local business entries used for various scamming operations.

How is OpenStreetMap dealing with such things. Are there any effective protection measures against entering fake info?

Not really.

To prevent such abuse, we have only the interest and knowledge of local OSMers who are constantly working on improving the map and who have a vested interest in keeping it honest. Should OSM ever become as popular as Google Maps I believe some measures to ensure data integrity will need to be instituted. The OSM philosophy is to interfere with mappers as little as possible. While that's very nice in some ways, it leaves the door open to sabotage and misuse.

Others in the forum may have more to add to this. I hope this bit helps.

Like any other kind of vandalism, it's been pretty manageable in practice. We still get a steady stream of online-only and bitcoin "shops", but they're not that hard to notice, and very easy to cleanup.
