I don't belief you have done something wrong editing. I suspect there is something wrong on your system. Can you try using a different browser or different system? What exactly are you doing when the area turns pitch black? Is it the whole map or just a specific area? When you say it turns black, what do you see in the editor window? No background image, I presume. But do you see some data (lines/labels), controls (to zoom for example), any notifications? Have you tried on another device and in a different browser as I had asked above?

Correct - no background image.I have been using chrome and did as you said - logged in via internet explorer and it has worked - now have google earth background image again?? Many thanks indeed. Much appreciated

For info. It won't be Google Earth, we are not allowed to use it for OSM, it will be another source such as Bing
