Mapping tiles to Long/Lat and to a sphere

Hi.

Is there some documentation as to how the tiles(from the tileservers) map to Longitude/Latitude?

I'm thinking about documentation, -not- pointers to frameworks.

I've been trying to find it, but most of the stuff I can find is related to using various frameworks, instead of explaining how things actually works.
