how do I start contributing to Missing Maps?

New member today. I've tried reading and following several tutorials and instructions in order to assist with mapping in an area on Missing Maps. But, I'm not succeeding...

Somewhere I read about practicing on a map of your own area, but I can't find way to do that.

Suggestions on the right tutorial for starters? thank you for all you're doing.
