Hi there, I am a bit fed up with osm at the moment: I have uploaded quite a long track from my weekend trip - approx 250 km across the whole country. When I choose "gps-tracks" -> "own", the Potlatch window opens, and then I recieve the error message "couldn't load the map". This is now the second day it is happening and I want to make the edits in the map asap, so I can still remember everything. With JOSM, I can choose to load everything along my track, even if I choose the option "50 m", it gives me an "unexpected error". I understand, that long tracks require editing before, e.g. to split them into many smaller ones. but when I use several programmes recommended in the wiki, I cannot load the track. It is a gpx created with a Garmin eTrex Vista HCx. Is there a file format issue? Opinions, tips, suggestions and help appreciated. Thank you! asked 30 Aug '11, 13:14 moszkva ter SomeoneElse ♦ |
Potlatch2 works with URLs such as this, so you could locate the area that you want, zoom in, and then show tracks with the "gps data" option. This will show all tracks but won't show your saved waypoints, though. Alternatively - use that URL again, zoom in, and then in Potlatch2 just load the track that you want via "My Tracks". That'll load the track and waypoints too. answered 30 Aug '11, 16:02 SomeoneElse ♦ sorry for asking stupid questions, but what is the "gps data" option? I only see the register "GPS-Tracks", and then when I choose my tracks, I get again zoomed at the first point of the track, and not the area I want to edit.

Instead, go to http://www.openstreetmap.org/ and navigate (in view mode) to where you want to start editing, and zoom in as far as you can there. From there, select the "edit" button above the main map and zoom in a bit more as soon as the editor window loads. The link will be of the form: http://www.openstreetmap.org/edit?lat=53.154617&lon=-1.604711&zoom=18 where the "zoom=" bit controls how far you're zoomed in. The editor supports much higher zoom levels than map view so you can try e.g. "zoom=24" there...

... and then, at the top left of the Potlatch 2 window you'll see "Background", Map Style" and "GPS Data". Click the little drop-down arrow next to "GPS Data" and select "My tracks". It'll say "fetching traces" for a while and when that goes away you can click on a track and load it. After a little while longer that'll appear as a blue line in the editor as normal.

Have you zoomed right in? if not you might be tring to load too much data and it will fail related question http://help.openstreetmap.org/questions/2181/error-trying-load-map answered 30 Aug '11, 13:25 andy mackey is the problem at the uploading stage (of GPX) or down load of map into the editor

downloading it into the editor It auto-zooms at the beginning of the track. When I pan, it works fine in the beginning, but after some time, I get this error. Then, the rest of the day, I can forget about working :(

are you panning into cities or other crowded data areas and are still zoomed right in? if this does solve it I have no other ideas at the moment sorry

sometimes cities. but when I finished and saved my edits, for example in the morning (europe), then I recieve this error the whole day. Then I can only hope to being able to edit the next day. Very annoying, I can tell... It would be cool, if I can zoom into the area I want to edit in Podlatch before loading the track to it, that might solve some problems. I guess, many people keep the GPS running while driving long distances, just to see if the geometry is correct, and fixing errors only when they encounter some if track and map are overlaying.

I almost always zoom in to max, click on the edit tab pick p2 then do gps data and pick my trace rarely have problems maybe the broadband is a bit busy in your location and it leads to a time out.

so what is the suggested procedure in this case, andy mackey? zoom in the area, open podlatch2, and then, what to do so I have only this area and my track? Connecting issues - I was already thinking about it... but my internet works fine, normally.
