how can i find a mapping party in my area? maybe nearby universities have mapping activities of some kind? I'd really love to find a mapping study buddy/support group of some kind.

The wiki has a list of current events and there is also a page explaining how to organize your own mapping party.

In addition to the places already listed, I'd have a look at the "Contact" section on the main page of the wiki. There are many country- and region-specific mailing lists, and a post there might be the best way to get into contact with local mappers. Also, there are always people around on the #OSM IRC channel (and there's a web interface for that if you don't already have an IRC client).

You can also, of course, message individual local mappers through the OSM web site.

I have not been to one but I'm sure they could be very helpful when getting started. The videos are a useful substitute but to meet some other mappers should be good. Try looking for a project that needs some work locally and see if you can set it up by using the forum in some way
