So New Zealand has the New Zealand Gazetteer of Place Names https://gazetteer.linz.govt.nz/ - it has every named geographic feature in NZ.

Want to know how I could get them in somewhat quickly. Obviously quite a few are already on the map but many aren't. Would be happy to check them one by one if I had a quick way.

How do I even go about starting something like this?

seem okay from licence as has the following:

New Zealand Gazetteer by the NZGB is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.

Unfortunately, Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License is not enough for import in OSM, mainly because we can't enforce attribution, if I understand correctly.

You have to request a specific authorization from the data publisher.

The list of already accepted requests is on the wiki, there is a specific LINZ page.

Before any large-scale import, please be aware of the import guidelines, it's not a task to be taken lightly.

You should first synchronize with the NZ community, for example through this page.

Good luck.
