Might there be a way, via /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d, to workaround different bindings, allowing users, via a separate second mouse (or even the same mouse) use JOSM without injuring their muscle memory acquired from other map editors?

I know of no X-Window shenanigans, but there is a touchscreenhelper plugin that allows you to move the map with left drag if you're holding T.

I find this issues really isn't as big as I would expect, I do occasionally try to pan with MMB but after a minute or two I tend to change modes. The ones that really drives me nuts are the programs that always zoom from the middle rather than where the mouse is.

OK. Thanks. There finally is hope. OK, I filed .

P.S., an hour of JOSM messes up my use of all other mapping programs (and JOSM) for a whole month. It's like you aren't sure which is the gas pedal or the brake pedal anymore. You aren't affected. Good for you. I don't drink alcohol so don't wish to feel drunk for a whole month after one hour of that.
