Our neighborhood has alternating streets and alleys. The front doors of all the homes face the streets. On the alleys, some homes have garages, some just fenced off backyards.

We've found that OSRM will route people to the alley side of houses if the house sits closer to the alley than the street, even though the house's "address" is properly listed on the street side.

This results in people occasionally finding disoriented delivery drivers (I'm looking at you, Amazon Logistics and Ubereats :) wandering around in their backyards and banging plaintively on their garage doors.

What's the best way to handle this? Is there a tag we should put on the alleys to indicate that the houses on it can't be publicly accessed from that side?

Or should I go add entrance nodes for each house indicating their front door locations?

Are the alleys actually tagged as such: highway=service + service=alley? Could you point us to the area of interest so we can check what might be done to improve the situation?

Hi LaenFinehack, can you link to an actual example? Thanks, J

If the alleys are truly private access you could add access=private to them. This may depreciate them enough for routers to prefer the front route. Cycle routers might try to avoid some surfaces or smoothness tags.

Adding driveways (if present) might give software a better way to get near the building.

I don't know if entrances will affect any routers, but they show on some navigation apps and may be a visual indication to drivers that they on the wrong side.
