Why not ask your question on the new OpenStreetMap Community Forum?

Hi, I am interested in becoming a mapper.

I live in Santiago de Chile, have own transportation and could travel within South America.

Thanks

Sergio

The easy way is to use the bing back ground with potlach2 editor to trace and tag stuff with your local knowledge of your local area. but when you travel a bit a gps,a camera and a Dictaphone or note pad and pencil will be useful. The documentation (wiki) has loads of useful and interesting stuff and these searchable questions are good as well

Becoming a mapper is as easy as creating a new user and submitting data via one of the editors.

Our Wiki is an excellent resource for you to get to grips with OpenStreetMap. Read its Beginners' guide. Subscribe to the Chile mailing list to get in touch with other mappers in your country. If any are nearby, it is often great to meet them and get a first-hand introduction to mapping.

The Wiki also has a good Spanish entry page, and the Chilean community run their own blog (also in Spanish).
