I want to use OSM with my laptop running Windows XP and my GlobalSat BT-338 bluetooth GPS receiver to following our progress on a river cruise through the Netherlands. Is this possible?

If it is will I be able to download a map to my laptop or will I need an internet connection to be open all the time.

Thanks

You can try several programs running on WinXP which can compute a GPS signal and display your position on offline map data:

  • Mapfactor Navigator free 11
  • Navipowm
  • Gosmore
  • Navit

to name but a few. More are listed here: Desktop

You can differentiate between programs that can preload tile data to display a kind of map, or binary map data that is displayed as vector data with even better zooming features by using less space on your harddisk.

This software http://www.mapyx.com/quo/ will display OSM as a background map and in the tools menu there is a live gps function which works with my garmin vista HCX via usb. not sure about blue tooth though let us know if it works good luck... edit its free there are others you can try memory map, gps utility and oziexplorer which have free trials and may have blue tooth connectivity.
