I would like to download the world map as pdf so I can later add things in Illustrator. I only need a vector map of the world with the shoreline end country boarders. It seems the file is too big to generate.

OpenStreetMap is probably much too detailed for what you need. Try this: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Maps_of_the_world

Ok, however these maps are as png. Can I find such a map as vector file (pdf, eps)? And with the same world representation/shape as OpenStreetmaps?

Look again - most are SVG. If you want the same projection as OSM uses, limit your search to those with "mercator" in the name/description. www.naturalearthdata.com is a more sophisticated option but you'll need to use a GIS software like QGIS or ArcGIS to make a PDF/SVG from the shapes you can download there.
