In Phuket Thailand and editing in Firefox browser I can see using Bing aerial background my gps track appears wrong - starts right over a house! Change to ESRI or other background and track appears right - on the road. As I want to convert this gps track to access path does it matter which backgound I use?

Background imagery isn't always accurately aligned with the real world. Sometimes it can be off by several meters or warped. This is particularly common in hilly areas where more work and accurate information is required to correctly 'flatten' the satellite images.

In most cases GPS tracks are more accurate than imagery unless the GPS device's 'view' of the sky was partially blocked or if large buildings are reflecting the signal. For best results multiple traces over several days can help to average out the error.

This page has instructions for aligning imagery in several of the OpenStreetMap editors including iD which is the default in-browser editor.
