I deleted an incorrect answer and it took other valid comments away at the same time, sorry,what should I have done

This a question about questions, a meta-question, and so technically it maybe doesn't belong on here. But it's not really doing much harm. For future reference though, there's a whole site called 'meta-stack-overflow' dedicated to meta-questions about this software. An on there there's this question which is pretty similar

As far as I understand, comments here can be located either directly below a question (like this one) or "under an answer", in which case they only should concern that specific answer (and would disappear with it).

If they were good advice unrelated to your incorrect answer and still associated with it, well they were misplaced...

An alternative approach to deleting the wrong answer with the good comments could be to correct (edit) the answer.
