I made some updates to trails about three weeks ago. They appear on the map on my computer but have yet to appear in the OSM app and other apps which draw on the OSM data? Oddly, the correction do appear in at least one app Motion X. When or how does the app get updated?

Which "app" are you referring to? The OSM website or ....

Most apps that use their own maps (in other words that are not just views on openstreetmap.org), will copy the data from the original OpenStreetMap database, process it and then make it available to the users of the app.

This update process in completely under control of the map makers. E.g. OsmAnd normally updates the maps on a monthly basis, but allows you to pay for more frequent updates.

So contact the owners of your app to see how frequently they update their maps.
