Let's say somebody maps a school. The school has the info about the name of the village where the school is located. But the village isn't mapped with a name (there may be a node already stating it is a village, but no name yet). I think I've used source=inference for similar cases (it being implicit that the inferences are made from OSM data). answered 18 Jul '18, 21:59 SK53 ♦ It looks one possibility. I've checked taginfo and only 86 appearances of inference (although some others combined with other values). But I've seen that there are more than 3900 of source=OSM...
