Overpass Augmented Diffs - combine with existing dataset

I've downloaded all data within a bounding box to a .OSM file. A while later I will want to download only amended data for the same area. The information on the Augmented Diffs provides what I require.

The instructions I'm missing are how to update the original .OSM file with details in the Aug Diff file.
